action

In Hinrich's neighborhood, the butcher's wife, from whom he regularly shops, dies of heart failure. Shortly afterwards, the dead brother and family doctor, Dr. Hans Fürst when he drives away from the funeral very drunk. His car is found in a river, but there is no trace of himself. Chief Detective Hinrichs and his colleague Diekmann find information about Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the library from which Fürst had borrowed literature for his studies .

Since Fürst is the brother-in-law of the butcher Cordes and he had issued the death certificate for his sister, Hinrichs and Diekmann suspect that something should possibly be covered up. A Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease that might have occurred, which would be a disaster for the butchers and farmers in the region. After Cordes' body was exhumed to clarify the matter, it turned out that Isolde Cordes was indeed infected with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, but that this form cannot be traced back to the infectious variant of BSE . She died of an overdose of morphine, which her brother very likely gave her to relieve her from suffering from an incurable disease.

The commissioners assume that Dr. Prince is no longer alive. His brother-in-law Gunther Cordes, who has since gone into hiding and is found dead a short time later, is suspect. For Hinrichs, all of this is more than a mystery. He does not rule out that Cordes was killed by his daughter-in-law because she considers him to be the killer of Fürst, with whom she has a relationship.

In the meantime it turns out that Fürst is not dead, but only went into hiding to go into rehab. Cordes had helped him and given him medicine to get through the withdrawal. When Cordes came under suspicion of killing the Prince, he wanted him to show himself to the public. They quarreled over this, and Prince Cordes had slain in his emotional state. Prince then takes his own life.
