The Velké Losiny Castle (German Schloss Groß Ullersdorf ) in the same municipality Velké Losiny belongs to the Moravian Okres Šumperk in the Czech Republic .

history

On the site of a Gothic moated castle, Johann von Žerotín (also Zierotin ) had a three-wing Renaissance castle built around an arcaded courtyard between 1580–1589 . The outer walls are richly decorated with sgraffito ornaments. The tiled stoves also date from the time it was built. In 1693 the palace complex was expanded to include a three-wing baroque building and a French garden was laid out.

The west wing houses two chapels, which were painted in 1742 by Johann Christoph Handke . The dining room, the knight's hall with its splendid coffered ceiling and the ancestral hall with portraits of important personalities of the Žerotín family are noteworthy. The castle also houses a collection of paintings by Italian, Flemish and Dutch masters, as well as a collection of weapons.

After the Thirty Years' War the palace was the scene of the infamous witch trials of Groß Ullersdorf , which were led by the inquisition judge Heinrich Franz Boblig von Edelstadt and in which numerous people were killed.

Since 1802 the castle and rule of Groß Ullersdorf have been owned by the von Liechtenstein family . In 1908, Alois von und zu Liechtenstein chose the castle as his family's permanent residence. During his reign, the library wing was built and the outer bailey was redesigned in Empire style. In 1945 the Liechtenstein family was expropriated. The castle passed into state ownership.
