Matthias Meisner (born July 22, 1961 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German journalist and editor of the Berliner Tagesspiegel .

Youth and education

Matthias Meisner grew up in Langen (Hessen) . In 1980 he received his Abitur at the Dreieich School in Langen. In the same year he did his one-year community service at the Dreieich Hospital in Langen . From 1980 to 1985 he worked as a freelance journalist; primarily for the Frankfurter Neue Presse . Meisner was a co-founder of the youth magazine Du Mayst, which appeared in the Offenbach district from 1982, and remained its editor-in-chief until 1985.

Working life

Meisner volunteered at the German Press Agency (dpa) from 1985 to 1987 and was then the agency's state policy correspondent in Stuttgart . On July 1, 1990, he moved to Saxony and set up the dpa office in Dresden , which he managed until 1994. From 1994 to 1999 he was the national political correspondent for the Sächsische Zeitung in Bonn .

Meisner has been working for the Tagesspiegel since 1999. As a correspondent, he reports on domestic politics and the spectrum of left parties, among other things. He dealt extensively with the Pegida demonstrations and the discussion about refugee policy . He commented on his reporting on the topics of refugees, AfD and Pegida, but also on the role of social media in journalistic work, in various interviews, including for lügenpresse.de, Deutschlandfunk and Mediendienst Ost.

Meisner's co-edited book “Unter Sachsen. Between anger and welcome ”caused some violent negative reactions from Saxon conservative and right-wing local politicians.

Honors

In 2015, Meisner's reporting on Pegida was nominated for the journalists ' award “Der Long Breath” from the Berlin-Brandenburg Journalists' Association (JVBB).

In February 2016 he was recognized for his reporting on refugee policy in the category Reporter regional third place in the " Journalist of the Year Award".

In 2016 he was awarded the Second Prize of the Guardian Prize of the German daily press for his reporting on Pegida and the anti-asylum movement in Saxony .
