Carlos Fraenkel

Carlos Fraenkel (born March 21, 1971 in Münster ) is a German-Brazilian philosopher .

Fraenkel grew up in Germany and São Paulo . His grandparents were expelled from Germany as Jews . He studied in Berlin and Jerusalem philosophy . From 2013 to 2015 he was Professor of Comparative Religion at Oxford University and since 2015 he has been James McGill Professor of Philosophy and Religion at McGill University in Montreal . In Germany he became known through his book With Plato in Palestine . His research interests include the philosophies of Maimonides and Spinoza as well as political philosophy.

As a visiting professor he gives lectures in Princeton, Jerusalem, Paris, Munich and Oxford. He also regularly writes essays for Die Zeit , the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , the London Review of Books, the New York Times and the Times Literary Supplement . He was the laudator at the award of the Walter Hasenclever Prize of the City of Aachen to Robert Menasse on November 18, 2018.
