Thomas Matussek

Thomas Matussek (born September 18, 1947 in Lauda ) is a former German diplomat , who was ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2002 to 2006 , permanent representative of Germany to the United Nations in New York between 2006 and 2009 and, most recently, ambassador to India from 2009 to 2011 was.

Life

After graduating from high school, he began studying law and history in Bonn and Paris . Matussek embarked on a career as a diplomat after passing the 2nd state examination in law. From July 2006 to November 2009 he was Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations in New York City . Before that he was head of the ministerial office of the then Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel , from 1999 to 2002 head of Political Department 3 in the Foreign Office and then until 2006 German ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Irritations in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag came from his offer as the German UN Ambassador to the United Nations to deploy border guards to patrol the Syrian border in support of the ceasefire in Lebanon . The federal government apparently did not intend to offer such support.

From 2009 to 2011 he was the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to India in New Delhi . From the end of 2011 to the end of 2012, Thomas Matussek was Head of Public Affairs at Deutsche Bank .

From January 2013 to August 2016 he was managing director of the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft (AHG), the international forum of Deutsche Bank. Matussek is currently working as a Senior Adviser at the international British consultancy Flint Global.

Memberships

Matussek is a board member of the German Society for the United Nations , the International Economic Senate. V. and in the Steering Committee of the Königswinter Conference. He is Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Aspen Institute Germany. He serves on the boards of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the JF Kennedy Atlantic Forum. He is also a supporting member of the Association of Friends of the World Cultures and a member of the German-British Society .

Others

Thomas Matussek has four brothers. One is the journalist Matthias Matussek , who also reported from London during Thomas Matussek's tenure as ambassador to London as a correspondent for the news magazine Der Spiegel . Another brother, Peter Matussek , is professor for media aesthetics at the University of Siegen . He is a nephew of the psychiatrist Paul Matussek and the biochemist Norbert Matussek.

He is married and has three children.
