Peter Wittig (born August 11, 1954 in Bonn ) is a retired German diplomat . He was last ambassador in London from summer 2018 to April 2020 . After retiring from the diplomatic service, he moved to the automotive supplier Schaeffler in May 2020 .

Life

After attending school, he studied history , political science and law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , the University of Kent and the University of Oxford . After completing his studies , he received his doctorate in 1982 with a thesis entitled The English Way to Socialism: The Fabians and Their Significance for the Labor Party and English politics . Between 1979 and 1982 Wittig was a research assistant at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and the author of specialist articles on the history of ideas and foreign policy . Peter Wittig is married and has four children.

career

In 1982 he entered the diplomatic service and after completing his preparatory service found employment at the Embassy in Madrid and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City . He then became a personal advisor to the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs .

In 1997 he was appointed ambassador to Lebanon and then in 1999 to Cyprus . During this time he was also the Federal Government Commissioner for the Cyprus Conflict . In 2002 he first became Ambassador and Deputy Head of the Department for the United Nations and Global Issues. He then became head of the GF department (Global Issues, United Nations , Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid ) at the Federal Foreign Office in 2006 . In December 2009 he was appointed permanent representative to the United Nations in New York and he was chairman of the UN Security Council several times .

In April 2014 Wittig moved to Washington as German ambassador . From mid-2018 until his retirement from active diplomatic service in April 2020, he was German ambassador in London . His successor as ambassador was Andreas Michaelis .

Wittig moved to the automotive supplier Schaeffler in May 2020 to set up and manage a new corporate division for Global Affairs.
