Andreas Michaelis (born July 24, 1959 in Hanover ) is a German diplomat and has been German Ambassador to the United Kingdom since May 2020 . Before that he was State Secretary of the Foreign Office .

Life

After attending school in Hanover and doing military service, he studied in Hanover and Oxford with the degrees of Master and Master of Letters. He is married and has three children.

career

Michaelis joined the German diplomatic service in 1989. From 1991 to 1992 he worked in the office of the Minister of State in the headquarters, from 1992 to 1995 he was at the German Embassy in Tel Aviv. From 1995 to 1998 he was a member of the Human Rights Task Force at headquarters.

Under Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer , he initially served as deputy spokesman from 1998 and from 1999 as spokesman for the Foreign Office. Michaelis was ambassador to Singapore from 2002 to 2006 . From 2006 to 2007 he served in Berlin as a representative for Asia and Pacific policy and from 2007 to 2011 as a representative for Near and Middle Eastern policy and the Maghreb in the Foreign Office. Michaelis was the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Israel from July 2011 to July 2015 .

From 2015 to March 2018 Michaelis was Political Director at the Federal Foreign Office. In this role he was u. a. also entrusted the negotiations on the Ukraine dossier, the implementation of the nuclear agreement with Iran and the political solution to the Syria conflict. From March 2018 to April 2020 he was one of two permanent state secretaries at the Federal Foreign Office. He was u. a. responsible for the political departments in the Federal Foreign Office and thus for European policy, relations with the USA and Russia as well as the Near / Middle East, Asia and Africa policy. His predecessor Markus Ederer moved to Moscow as EU ambassador.

In January 2020 it was announced that he would follow Peter Wittig as ambassador in London . He took up the post in London in May 2020. His successor as State Secretary was the head of the economic department in the Foreign Office, Miguel Berger .
