Markus Ederer (born November 10, 1957 ) is a German lawyer and diplomat and EU ambassador to Russia.

Life

From 1979 to 1983 Ederer studied law , international relations and Southeast Asia studies at the universities in Passau and Geneva . He then continued his law studies at the University of Miami / USA ( Master of Laws (LL.M.)). In 1988 he received his doctorate from the law faculty at the University of Passau and started at the Foreign Office.

career

Ederer was Head of the Political / Economic Evaluation Subdivision at the Federal Intelligence Service in Munich and Berlin and Head of Cabinet of the Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe in Brussels. From 2005 to 2010 he was head of the planning team at the Foreign Office; his successor was Robert von Rimscha .

Then Ederer was ambassador of the European Union in the People's Republic of China and Mongolia . From January 2014 to October 2017, Ederer was State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office ( Merkel III cabinet ). He has been the European Union's ambassador to Russia since October 2017 .
