Political Director

Political director is an official title in the German Foreign Office (AA). The Political Director heads Political Department 2 and is one of the Foreign Minister's closest advisers.

The official or job title of "Political Director" has a long tradition in the Foreign Office. The Political Director heads Political Department 2 of the Foreign Office and advises the Foreign Minister on all questions that fall within his competence.

Political Department 2 coordinates German foreign policy within the EU as well as towards the countries of Europe, North America and Central Asia. The department is also responsible for all aspects of European and transatlantic security policy.

The Political Director is also responsible for dossiers assigned to him by the Foreign Minister, such as the nuclear agreement with Iran and the international Syria negotiations.

Well-known political directors of the Foreign Office were Gerold von Braunmühl (murdered by the RAF ), Klaus Scharioth , Wolfgang Ischinger , Michael Schäfer and Andreas Michaelis (State Secretary of the Foreign Office from 2018 to 2020). Jens Plötner has been the current Political Director since April 2019 .
