Klaus Scharioth (2009)

Klaus Erich Scharioth (born October 8, 1946 in Essen ) is a German diplomat . From 1999 to 2002 he was Political Director and Head of the Political Department in the Foreign Office and from 2002 to 2006 State Secretary . From March 2006 to June 2011 Scharioth was the German ambassador to the USA . Since August 2011 Scharioth has been the rector of the Mercator College for international tasks . He also teaches as Professor of Practice at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford, Massachusetts, USA.

education

After graduating from high school in 1966 at the Goethe School in Essen, Scharioth studied political science, sociology and psychology for a year as a Rotary scholar at the College of Idaho in Caldwell , Idaho. He completed his law studies in Bonn, Freiburg and Geneva in 1973 with the first state examination in law. Until 1975 he studied international relations, international law and international economics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy , the Harvard Law School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government .

Scharioth holds a Master of Arts (1974), a Master of Law and Diplomacy (1975) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1978) degrees , all from the Fletcher School.

Diplomatic service

Scharioth joined the Foreign Office in 1976. After working in the Asia department, in the press department and in the State Secretaries' office, he was sent to the German embassy in Quito in 1979 for his first assignment abroad . From 1982 to 1986 Scharioth was a member of the Foreign Office's planning staff and then from 1986 to 1990 he worked at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York . At the same time he was vice chairman of the UN Legal Affairs Committee and the Charter Committee.

From 1990 to 1993, Scharioth worked in the international law department of the Foreign Office and was then head of the cabinet of the NATO Secretary General in Brussels until 1996 . Subsequently, under Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel , he took over the management of the Defense and Security Policy Department in the Foreign Office. From 1997 to 1998 he was a member of the management team of the Foreign Office, from April 1998 as its head. He then headed the International Security and North America Division. During Joschka Fischer's term of office , Scharioth was promoted to Political Director and Head of the Political Department in 1999 and State Secretary in 2002 . In this office in 2005, Scharioth started the public debate about coming to terms with the Nazi dictatorship in the Foreign Office, which ended in 2010 with the presentation of the investigation The Office and the Past .

Scharioth became known to the general public through his role in the German government's crisis team during the tsunami damage in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and during the kidnappings in Iraq in 2005.

From March 13, 2006 to June 2011, Scharioth was the German ambassador to the United States of America.

Scharioth is married and has three children.

Awards

Scharioth received honorary doctorates from the College of Idaho (2007), Chatham University (2007) and Old Dominion University (2010). In addition, in 2000 he was awarded the Order of the Marienland Cross, 2nd Class, and in 2011, the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany.
