The Fletcher School (full name: The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy ) is a graduate school at Tufts University in Medford / Somerville (Massachusetts) . It was founded in 1933 by Tufts University as the oldest graduate school in the United States devoted to the study of international relations .

history

A legacy of three million US dollars from attorney Austin Barclay Fletcher in 1923 made the establishment possible. Except for two professors, all members of the early college college were professors at Harvard Law School . In 1934, Tufts took over the administration of the institute. The connection to Harvard is still evident today in the mutual right to use the libraries and to attend courses at both Harvard and Tufts (for Fletcher students at the HBS , HLS and KSG institutes ).

Since it was founded, the Fletcher School has seen itself as a "professional school". The aim of teaching is not just scientific, but above all vocational training. In this sense, a large number of the lecturers have practical experience outside of science and continue to be active in advisory and political roles. The dean of the Fletcher School James G. Stavridis is a former admiral in the US Navy and served from July 2009 to May 2013 as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) of NATO .

The institute also offers a wide range of opportunities for double degrees, which, in addition to the Fletcher degree, include the Juris Doctor ( Harvard Law School , Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley ), the MBA ( Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth , HEC) Paris ) or lead to other degrees.

Others

In Talloires , near Geneva, the Fletcher School organizes an annual symposium in a former Benedictine monastery that is part of the European Center of Tufts University .

The Fletcher School attaches great importance to a close community of students, and tries to maintain this tradition, despite the increased number of students compared to the early years. The school actively promotes this through the financial support of over 40 clubs and organizations. Every year, the students travel together to New York in the fall and Washington, DC in the spring on career trips and meet employers and alumni there. Over 300 Fletcher students and students from friendly institutes take part in the annual ski trip to Maine .
