Raphael Thelen

Raphael Thelen (* 1985 in Bonn ) is a German journalist. He lives and works in Berlin.

Thelen studied political science, philosophy and economics at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . After graduating in 2011, he moved to Cairo and reported on post-revolutionary Egypt . He then lived in Lebanon and reported on the Syrian civil war and its consequences for the region.

In 2014 Thelen completed a year at the Zeitenspiegel reportage school and then became a member of the agency of the same name. He reported from East Germany in several series of reports on the blog Neue Normalität he founded, Zeit Online and Spiegel Online on the rise of the New Right . In some places his reports led to a broad social debate about how to deal with the law.

In his book “Straße der Träume”, published in 2018, Thelen argues that the view of many media on East Germany is no longer up-to-date and that it helped promote the rise of the New Right. The Federal Agency for Civic Education has included the book in its program.

In 2019 he left the Zeitenspiegel agency. Since then he has mainly written for the news magazine DER SPIEGEL .

Thelen is a member of the jury of the Hansel Mieth Prize Digital and the Board of Trustees of the Johann Philipp Palm Prize for Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Press .

criticism

In 2018, Thelen posted public criticism of inappropriately close proximity to right-wing politicians on a Twitter post. He had portrayed a politician from the right-wing populist party AfD in detail in the Süddeutsche newspaper and wrote this on Twitter with the words “A year and a half argued, laughed and drank rum with AfD man Markus Frohnmaier . Although he is as radical as possible, it was important to me to be fair with him when writing. ”Advertised. As a result, he was attested, among other things, "too close" to the portrayed AfD politician. Thelen assessed the criticism as excessive.
