Johann Philipp Palm Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Johann Philipp Palm Prize for Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Press has been awarded every two years since 2002 by the Board of Trustees of the Palm Foundation eV in memory of the Schorndorf bookseller Johann Philipp Palm in Schorndorf . The initiator and sponsor of the award is the pharmacist couple Maria and Johann-Philipp Palm (1918–2004). The award is endowed with 20,000 euros.

Because of the dissemination of the anti- Napoleonic pamphlet Germany in its deep humiliation , Johann Philipp Palm was executed on August 26, 1806 in Braunau am Inn . Palm refused to reveal the names of the authors of the pamphlet until the very end. In this tradition, the prize honors women, men and institutions that "provide an outstanding example of personal or institutional commitment to the unhindered realization of freedom of expression and freedom of the press."

The award winner (s) will usually be announced on August 26, the anniversary of Palm's death. Cooperation partners of the award-giving foundation are the city of Schorndorf, Amnesty International , Reporters Without Borders and the House of History Baden-Württemberg . The patron is the respective Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
