Stephan Mussil

Stephan Mussil (born July 16, 1952 in Vienna ) is an Austrian cameraman.

biography

Mussil was born on July 16, 1952 as the son of Herbert Waldemar and Hertha Mussil (née Vukovits). After attending grammar school, Mussil studied at the Higher Graphic Federal Teaching and Research Institute in Vienna - Department of Photography and Film (with Professors Hartmann and Schwingenschlögl). After that, the works "Retinal killer" (1970), "Vasarely" (1971) and "Bazooka" (1972) were created.

In 1972 he co-founded the Graphiennale. He later graduated from the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in the field of design, photo design (with Professors Karl Martin Holzhäuser and Gottfried Jäger ) and painting . Various exhibitions of painting and photographic work followed. He also worked as an advertising photographer. From 1974 to 1981 he was also employed by the ORF .

In 1982 he founded Stephan Mussil Filmproduktion. He shot numerous documentaries, advertising, industrial and feature films as well as music videos and also took on several teaching activities.

Mussil is married to Bigi Egger and has two children, Joseph (* 1981) and Jakob (* 1983). He is a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus , the Association of Austrian Cinematographers and the Cinematography Association .

Work

Mussil sees the camera not only as a technical, but rather as a psychological instrument. As a result, the dialogue between the protagonist and the camera, processes and choreography in one shot are just as important as the technical and artistic aspects, for example light, perspective , focal length, panning rhythm and image detail.
