Jan Haft
Jan Michael Haft (* 1967 in Munich ) is a German documentary filmmaker whose animal and nature films have received numerous awards.
Life
Jan Haft is the son of a primary school teacher, his father is a physicist and patent attorney . As a child, Jan Haft was fascinated by nature at home, so that his desire to have something to do with it later on for work was determined early on. He did his community service at the State Association for Bird Protection . He studied geology , paleontology and biology at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Würzburg . In the early 1990s he started as an assistant at animal film , where he helped with the work and gained important experience over the course of several months of filming trips, for example from Wieland Lippoldmüller or Walter Sigl .
In 1996 he founded his own film production company, from 2001 under the name nautilusfilm GmbH , with which he produced nature documentaries that received numerous awards. Today his company is one of the most successful in the German nature film industry. By 2015 he received more than 180 awards from international nature film festivals. Jan Haft lives in a place in the Upper Bavarian Isen valley that he made known with the multi-award-winning documentary Mein Isental . Further projects took him around the world.
Jan Haft's films are usually co-produced by public television . A 3sat editorial team judged his work: “Detention does not necessarily focus on the mighty, the big, but puts small things in a cinematic light, such as stag beetles , kingfishers or field crickets .” NDR television found: “As lively, as mystical as with Jan Haft has never been seen in the forest. It is a place full of big and small wonders, which Haft shows in his new documentary film Mythos Wald . ”In 2013, the nature film series Erlebnis Erde ran as a two-part Wild Rhine , in which Haft shows the Rhine fauna from the North Sea to the Alps. After five years of shooting, his nature film Magie der Moore with Axel Milberg as a narrator came to the cinema in September 2015 . The documentation again uses wide-angle and telephoto lenses, snorkel and endoscope optics, cable cars and self-constructed rail systems for motorized camera sleds.
On April 4, 2019, Haft's nature film Die Wiese - A paradise next door came to German cinemas, the project was funded by the German Wildlife Foundation . In addition to the diversity of flora and fauna in the local natural meadows, the film also shows the desolation of the meadows through overfertilization and pesticides. According to the daily newspaper Die Welt , the film presents “breathtaking images of native nature”. However, the meadow is also "a call for careful handling of a habitat whose progressive decline could accelerate the extinction of species even further."
Haft's films have developed a very independent film language and aesthetic. The technical aspect of his film style was described in an NDR portrait: “Slow motion and fast motion, macro shots and moving cameras make processes barely visible to the eye tangible and reveal hidden connections. His films allow the viewer to immerse themselves in an apparently familiar world and to rediscover it. Not only are new visual highlights offered to the eye again and again, but apparently reliable findings are also called into question. "
Jan Haft's wife Melanie is a media and communication scientist. She has been working as a production manager for their joint film production company since 2001. The couple has three children and the family lives in a farmhouse in Isental .
