Rob Stewart (born December 28, 1979 in Toronto , Ontario ; † January 31, 2017 at Alligator Reef , Florida ) was a Canadian film producer , photographer and conservation biologist .

Life

Stewart grew up in Toronto. He began photography at the age of thirteen and soon specialized in underwater photography and videography . Stewart began to work as a diving trainer at the age of eighteen, but later became a part-time and full-time photographer for various nature magazines. Stewart earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Western Ontario .

Stewart later found a mentor in Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society . In 2002 he accompanied the crew of the Ocean Warrior to film them in their fight against illegal shark catches.

Awards

Stewart received over 30 international awards for his film Sharkwater , and his second film, Revolution , received 19 awards. Stewart has received the Genesis Award (2009) and the Environmental Vision Award (2008) for his work.

At the end of January 2017, Stewart went on a trip to Alligator Reef with a crew and the experienced diving instructor Peter Sotis to shoot for his new film Sharkwater: Extinction . After two successful dives with a rebreather , had no experience in the Stewart, first appeared Sotis and shortly after Stewart a third time. Sotis first went aboard the ship, where he collapsed and was supplied with oxygen by the crew. After the excitement subsided, it was noticed that Stewart was gone. An immediately initiated, large-scale search operation, which also included helicopters, an airplane and a remote-controlled underwater vehicle , was unsuccessful. The search was ended on February 3 at 4:30 p.m. local time, just under 72 hours after his disappearance. A few minutes later, a diving team found his body on the ocean floor, 90 meters from his last known position at 65 meters.
