Brøde (South Georgia)
Brøde

Brøde ( Norwegian for loaf of bread ) is a small, round island overgrown with tussock on the southern tip of South Georgia . It is located 1.5 km southwest of Green Island .

The British navigator and explorer James Cook mapped it in 1775 on his second South Sea voyage (1772–1775). The German explorer Ludwig Kohl-Larsen carried out a rough survey of the island on his expedition, which lasted from 1928 to 1930, and named it the main island . The South Georgia Survey reported in the course of a survey between 1951 and 1952 that the descriptive Norwegian name has long been established among whale and seal hunters. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names confirmed this designation in 1956.
