Green Island is a small, round and tussock- covered island on the southern tip of South Georgia . It is located immediately southeast of Cape Disappointment .
The British navigator and explorer James Cook summarized three islands near Cape Disappointment on his second South Sea voyage (1772–1775) descriptively as Green Islands because of their vegetation . The German explorer Ludwig Kohl-Larsen named the island described here in the course of his expedition, which lasted from 1928 to 1930, as Green Island or Green Island . The South Georgia Survey reported in the course of a survey between 1951 and 1952 that the three islands of the group of islands described by Cook are used by whale and seal hunters under separate names. In addition to Green Island, these are First Rock and Brøde Island . Cook's naming has since become obsolete.
