The First Rock (from English first 'first, foremost' ) is a rocky island on the southern tip of South Georgia . It is located 1.5 km south-southeast of Brøde Island and 3 km south of Cape Disappointment .
It is the first, that is, southernmost, of three islands south of Cape Disappointment, which the British navigator and explorer James Cook discovered in 1775 on his second voyage to the South Seas (1772–1775). The other two are Brøde and Green Island . The island got its name, based on its geographical location, from scientists from the British Discovery Investigations , who mapped South Georgia from 1926 to 1930.
