The Isen is a left tributary of the Inn in the southeast of Upper Bavaria with a length of around 76 kilometers. The Isengau landscape region and the Lower / Upper Isen-Sempt hill country are named after her.

Surname

The Isen takes its name from the Indo-European word eis , which means "to move violently and quickly". The name has been transferred to the Isen monastery and the market town of Isen .

course

Isen catchment area

The Isen rises near Lacken ( Maitenbeth municipality , Mühldorf am Inn district ) and shapes the largely natural landscape of Old Bavaria: the Isental .

Came to light in the district of Mühldorf, the Isenwasser initially flows through the district of Erding communities Isen , Lengdorf and Villages , only to flow back through the district Mühldorf ( Schwindegg , Ampfing , Mettenheim , Mühldorf and Erharting ). Finally it flows into the Inn in the district of Altötting (municipality of Winhöring ) on the north bank of the Inn Neuötting .

The valley can be divided (roughly) as follows:

  • The upper valley from the source to Esterndorf / Kopfsburg
  • The middle valley from Esterndorf / Kopfsburg to Wörth
  • The lower valley from Wörth to the mouth

Others

The confluence with the Inn was relocated further west between the districts of Kronberg and Unterau in the municipality of Winhöring in the course of the construction of the Munich – Mühldorf – Simbach railway line in the nineteenth century . The original mouth was previously at the level of the village of Kager. Even today, some swampy spots in fields and meadows point to the earlier course of the Isen.

The Isental with its side valleys used to be rich in castles (e.g. Kopfsburg, Zeilhofen, Steeg, Hofgiebing), of which only a few, such as Burgrain or Schwindegg , have been preserved. (→  List of castles, palaces and noble residences in Isental and the surrounding area )

The Isental with tributaries is an FFH area. In future, the federal motorway 94 will cross the valley on the 600-meter-long Isental bridge.

The water quality of the Isen is indicated as moderately to critically polluted.
