history

Burgrain Castle 1699 on a painting in the Fürstengang Freising

From 784 to 811 a first fortress was built under Bishop Atto von Freising, which was occupied from 1140 to 1290 by the Lords of Burgrain , Freising ministers . Around 1200 the "today's" medieval castle complex was built, a four-wing complex with a free-standing keep and neck moat, as well as other preliminary structures. In 1227 the castle became the seat of the princely-freisinger burgrave of the Burgrain rule . In a conflict with the Counts of Haag , the castle is captured in 1317. In the first half of the 15th century, extensive additions and alterations were made under Bishop Nicodemus, the prince's floor with a large hall was built. In 1639 there was a fire in the castle, as a result of which further renovations were carried out. Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing und Liechteneck had the large St. Georg Castle Church built in 1723. As a result of the secularization , the castle was auctioned in 1804 and subsequently had several owners, with the keep being demolished by around 40%. A castle owner had a brewery set up in the west wing at the end of the 19th century. In 1906 the building was converted into a home for the blind. Since 1919 it has been used again as a private residence and the west wing has meanwhile been removed down to the outer walls.

Building description

Burgrain Castle is an elongated three-wing castle building in a spur position on a castle hill that slopes sharply towards the northwest (40 meters above the Isen). In the middle of the south wing of the roof is high keep with 2.50 meters thick walls (Nagelfluhquader panel). The east wing is a long, narrow three-story residential wing. To the north is the 28 meter long Fürstenbau. The outer wall of the west wing is still there up to the ceiling height of the first floor to create a closed, trapezoidal inner courtyard (54.5 × 37.5 meters). The St. Georg Castle Church is located on the south-west corner (interior length 19 meters).

Interior of the church

The floor level of the church is, as there is an early Gothic lower church below, on the first floor, from the inner courtyard a staircase leads up to the church entrance. Outside there is a rococo roof turret at the north-west corner of the church . The new building was carried out by Dominik Gläsl until 1719 . The interior of the three-bay nave and the strongly drawn-in choir (two-bay, semicircular end) are richly decorated with delicate rococo stucco. Stucco work was done by Nikolaus Liechtenfurtner . The ceiling painting in the nave depicts Maria Immaculata . In the right side altar painting ( Johann Caspar Sing , 1723) you can see how the canonized Empress Kunigunde walks over glowing plowshares during a divine judgment. This is said to have happened on Burgrain. The image of the high altar, which takes up the entire width of the choir, shows St. George on horseback, also by JC Sing.
