History and building history

Ottenhofen Castle (around 1750)

Of the original U-shaped complex, only the south wing remains, a two-storey saddle roof structure with a turret , divided into six window axes and two double doors from the 18th century. The building is 22.16 meters long and 10.63 meters wide and has a usable area of 780 square meters. The core dates from around 1700. At the beginning of September 1967, the part of the south wing with the former brewery and painting wing was torn down and an extension with several apartments was built instead. The "lovely" roof turret with onion dome, which was considered the landmark of the building, was removed beforehand and replaced on the new building. It should “give eloquent testimony about the other lords of Ottenhofen”. Attempts were also made to design the facade of the new building in a similar way.

In a document from 1456, a castle is mentioned on the site of the castle . The cellar with a groin and barrel vault has been preserved from her . Late Gothic brick pillars and historic plastered surfaces can still be found here . The castle itself was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . The Counts of Rivera bought the castle built on the site of the castle in 1689, which probably had the turret as early as 1700. From 1709 the castle belonged to the Counts of Perusa. The Bavarian Hofvizepräsident Karl Felix Perusa let it expand and 1760 a Rococo - tea pavilion set up next to it, which still exists today. The castle belonged to the Counts of Perusa until 1821, when there was no more direct male heir and a distant relative from the Savoyard line of Perusa took over Ottenhofen. The French-speaking Baron de la Perous, who called himself "Franz Josef", further beautified the castle and built a fountain with a basin in the castle garden . In the following years the owners changed frequently. Many brewery owners can be found among these. For example, in 1895, the brewery owner Matthias Brenner from Markt Schwaben bought the estate and its brewery , which was closed three years later. The castle was finally demolished except for the south wing. In 1954 the remains of the castle became the property of the Ottenhofen municipality, which furnished four apartments in it. Previously, the rooms on the ground floor were used as storage and utility rooms.

Todays use

The south wing is now a listed building , but needs a complete renovation , which is why the municipality sold the castle to a cooperative in 2017 for cost reasons. After the renovation, apartments will be built again in the castle.
