Die Wiese - A paradise next door is a German documentary film by Jan Haft from 2019. It shows the diversity of the fauna and flora of species-rich meadows and the threats to this habitat in Germany.

action

The documentation presents the colorful, blooming summer meadow and its diverse inhabitants. Birds, grasshoppers, cicadas and numerous other animals live in this natural paradise, which Jan Haft put into scene with great technical effort. The main characters in the film are two young deer twins in their habitat between the edge of the forest and the meadow.

In addition to the diversity of flora and fauna of native natural meadows, the film shows their desolation through overfertilization and too early mowing and also why the loss of such biotopes of wild herbs, flowers and grass is one of the main causes of the disappearance of small and large wild animals.

production

The production of the film took three years and required 300 days of shooting and 1,000 hours in camouflage at around 30 locations. Large parts of the film were shot at Gut Klepelshagen owned by the German Wildlife Foundation . The latter commissioned the film and supported it financially “in order to create awareness for this very important living space, which is unfortunately becoming increasingly rare”.

Jan Haft worked with Minimal Techno DJ Dominik Eulberg for the music .

reception

The public premiere took place in front of 3,500 spectators in the Kiel Sparkassen-Arena . In 2019 the film was shown in around 800 cinemas in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and reached over 70,000 viewers. It was in the top 10 of the arthouse charts for several weeks and was part of the school cinema weeks offer nationwide. The film was released on DVD / Blu-Ray in October 2019. The first broadcast on Arte took place on August 20, 2020.
