Peter Berthold (born April 19, 1939 in Zittau ) is a German ornithologist and behavioral scientist . From 1991 to January 2005 he was head of the Radolfzell ornithological station , a branch of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen .

Life

After studying biology , chemistry and geography , he received his doctorate at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in 1964 with a reproduction study on starlings . In 1972 he received his habilitation in biology at the University of Konstanz , and since 1981 he has been a professor at the University of Konstanz. From 1998 until his retirement in 2004, Berthold was Director and Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society at the "Research Center for Ornithology of the Max Planck Society" (now: Max Planck Institute for Ornithology ).

Berthold deals with bird migration research and the areas of population dynamics , species protection and environmental influences in ornithology. The main areas of research are genetics and the experimental evolutionary biology of bird migration, especially the conversion of migratory birds into resident birds, long-term changes in bird life and the effects of current global warming. Berthold and his staff at the ornithological station are particularly well-known for their investigations on the blackcap .

Peter Berthold wrote several books, including ornithological standard works such as Vogelzug and together with Hans-Günther Bauer Die Brutvögel Mitteleuropas. Existence and Endangerment (1996). He published a total of more than 350 articles in specialist journals and was co-editor of the specialist organ Die Vogelwarte from 1970 to 2004 .

In addition, he is u. a. Member of the working group for the creation of red lists of endangered bird species in Germany. In order to cope with the massive deaths of songbirds caused by a lack of food, he recommends the adapted year-round feeding of songbirds. In 2001 Berthold was a consultant for the movie Nomaden der Lüfte - The Secret of Migratory Birds .

Peter Berthold was awarded the Philip Morris Research Prize in 2002 for his work .

In January 2005 he was appointed to the board of trustees of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation . On his initiative and with significant support from the Heinz Sielmann Foundation, the Heinz-Sielmann-Weiher - pilot project of the Sielmann Biotope Association Bodensee - was set up in his adopted home Owingen in 2005 in the Billafingen district where Berthold lives .

According to the project motto Every municipality has its biotope , the ornithologist, in cooperation with the Heinz Sielmann Foundation, also gave the impetus for the development of a nationwide network of biotopes in order to stop the rapid decline in biodiversity .

Since 2006 he has been a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

In an interview in 2013 on the debate about bird strikes on wind turbines, Peter Berthold said that anyone who prevents the ecological restructuring of the energy supply out of self-interest is an enemy of the state for him. He advocates wind turbines. A good choice of location could minimize the risks for birds so much that ornithologists could tolerate wind farms.
