history

The Felix von Hornstein Medal was awarded for the first time in the fifth financial year of the Federation for Nature Conservation in Upper Swabia, which was founded in Bad Wurzach on May 23, 1959 during the phase of reconstruction and economic miracle. The founders realized that parts of society tended to forget about conservation in the pursuit of progress and material prosperity.

The land consolidation in agriculture in connection with ever more effective construction machines and tractors particularly threatened the Upper Swabian moors and vineyards. Natural landscapes and near-natural landscapes with their often unique ecotopes were officially referred to as " wasteland " or " unland ". At the suggestion of the then District Administrator of Wangen im Allgäu , Dr. Walter Münch, Father Agnellus Schneider from the Salvatorkolleg Bad Wurzach founded this pure nature conservation association. He led the federal government as 1st chairman for over 40 years and then became honorary chairman. In 1979 he received the Felix von Hornstein Medal.
