Eugen Kauffmann (born January 1, 1882 in Stuttgart , † August 14, 1972 in Langenargen ) was a German entrepreneur. He headed the Johannes Kauffmann company for many years .

Life

Eugen Kauffmann was a son of Ernst Kauffmann, who founded the branch of the Stuttgart company Johannes Kauffmann in Langenargen in 1899 . Eugen Kauffmann took over its management as early as 1902. In 1905 he married Hedwig Stübler, with whom he had a daughter Ruth and a son Werner. Kauffmann took part in the First World War. After his return from the field he devoted himself increasingly to the expansion of the bed spring factory, which had emerged as a by-product of the family's grocery trade; In 1921 he built up the Bregenz branch, which was later to trade as the Alpenländische Bettfedernfabrik Johannes Kauffmann . In 1930 his son Werner died as a result of a riding accident; his daughter Ruth Krose joined the Johannes Kauffmann company as a partner in 1941, but Eugen Kauffmann held a managerial position in the company until his death, except for an interim phase after the Second World War , when he was arrested by the French occupation .

Kauffmann was one of the initiators, founders and sponsors of the Institute for Lake Research in Langenargen, which was set up after the First World War. Later a department was named after him as the Eugen Kauffmann Institute. He was a member of the Langenargen parish council, the parish council of the local evangelical parish, the administrative board of the savings bank and the association for the history of Lake Constance and its surroundings . He was also a member of the district hunters' association.

He was instrumental in helping - probably in 1940 - the repurchase of Montfort Castle .

Sports

Like his entire family, Eugen Kauffmann was active in equestrian sports. In the period after the Second World War he rebuilt the Swabian Riding Club , which was founded in 1901 . As its board member, he also wrote the festschrift, which was published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the association in 1951. In 1964 he handed over the chairmanship to Regimboto von Validlingen; but he remained honorary chairman until his death.

Honors

Eugen Kauffmann became an honorary citizen of the Langenargen community in 1955. Eugen-Kauffmann-Strasse in Langenargen and the institute mentioned above are named after him. He was also an honorary doctor of the University of Munich, holder of the Great Federal Cross of Merit with Star and the first holder of the Felix von Hornstein Medal .
