The bio towers in Lauchhammer.

The bio towers are an industrial monument in the southern Brandenburg town of Lauchhammer in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district . Under the motto Castel del Monte der Lausitz” , the last relics of the coke production that once helped shape Lauchhammer were included in the project list of the Fürst-Pückler-Land international building exhibition and their demolition was prevented. The bio towers are on the list of monuments of the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district .

The 22-meter-high landmark, already recognizable from afar, consists of 24 towers and was erected in 1957 on the site of the former brown coal coking plant in the north of Lauchhammer-West and put into operation in 1958/59. Here, until the coking plant , which went into operation in 1952, was shut down, wastewater containing phenol was treated biologically by trickling over blast furnace slag with which these so-called tower drip filters were filled.

The towers, which were once characterized by the unpleasant smell accompanying the treatment, have been a listed building since 1996. The plant ceased operations on December 31, 2002. After its renovation, which began in 2006 with funds from the European Regional Development Fund and from lignite renovation, it has been open to the public since its opening on July 17, 2008 as part of a project of the International Building Exhibition Fürst-Pückler-Land. Visitors can climb one of the towers that were used until 2002 and look over the former industrial area from two glazed viewing platforms .

There is also an exhibition building on the site and a concert and theater room is available for public events. Today the Biotürme belong to a non-profit subsidiary of the Art Casting Museum Lauchhammer Foundation, founded in 1994 .
