Fish farmers and fish landladies breed and catch fish, crustaceans and shellfish.

Situation in Germany

It is a recognized training occupation according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The training lasts three years and takes place both in the training company and in the vocational school. The profession of fish keeper has united the former professions of fisherman and fish farmer since 1972.

There are three different focuses of the profession:

1. Fish farming and fish farming:

Fish and shellfish are caught here.
3. Lake and river fishing

For fish farmers, after two years of professional experience, there is the possibility of qualification through the examination to become a fish management master . In 2009, 119 applicants passed the training to become fish farmers and 24 applicants qualified as fish management masters. Academic training in the field of fisheries is possible through specializations in the field of fishery biology and aquaculture at various German universities. The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Berlin offers the “Master's degree in Fishery Science and Aquaculture / Fish and Water Management” as an education.

Situation in Switzerland

The job description of the fish farmer does not exist in Switzerland. Instead, professional fishermen and fish farmers are trained.

Situation in Austria

The profession of fish keeper does not exist in Austria. In addition to the profession of fishery skilled worker, there are other “specializations and related job titles”: fishery worker, fishery manager, fish specialist, fish specialist, fish breeder, fish farmer, fish breeder, river fisherman, pond worker, pond master, fisherman, fisherman, helper, fisherman's assistant, fisherman's assistant, fisherman's assistant.
