Sculpture Park Cologne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cologne Sculpture Park is a 3-hectare park with outdoor sculptures by German and international artists in Cologne .

The conceptual difference to other sculpture parks is that it is designed as a "place for dealing with contemporary sculpture" . There is no permanent exhibition , instead some of the sculptures on display are regularly replaced with new ones every two years.

history

The initiator of the Cologne Sculpture Park was the art collector Michael Stoffel , who founded the Society of Friends of the Sculpture Park Cologne e. V. had launched. In cooperation with the city of Cologne, the park was created, which is located directly at the former home of the Stoffel couple and the current monastery house on Elsa-Brändström-Straße and is privately run. The Cologne Sculpture Park was managed by Michael Stoffel until his death in 2005. After that, his wife Eleonore Stoffel continued to run it until her death on April 16, 2007. On the initiative of the Michael and Eleonore Stoffel Foundation (MES), the Sculpture Park Cologne Foundation was established in 2008 and has now taken over the management of the park. It is thanks to the board of directors of MES that the sculptures in the park in Cologne are kept on permanent loan from the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich to Cologne, while the rest of the collection went to Munich as a whole.

A park with old trees was used as the site in 1997, which previously only existed as a fallow green space in front of the Cologne Zoo between the Zoobrücke and the Rhine by the City of Cologne . With the conversion to a sculpture park, the site received new paths and an entrance on Riehler Straße diagonally across from the Cologne Zoo. There is a second access from Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer. Parking spaces are indicated under the zoo bridge.

The Cologne Sculpture Park is open daily, admission is free. A paid tour is offered every first Sunday of the month.

The board of trustees initially consisted of a consortium , later Renate Goldmann , Friedrich Meschede and Thomas D. Trummer took over this task one after the other . The anniversary exhibition KölnSkulptur # 9 (2017-2019) for the 20th anniversary was curated by Chus Martínez . KölnSkulptur # 10 - ÜberNatur - Natural Takeover is designed by Tobias Berger , chief curator at the Tai Kwun Center of Heritage and Arts in Hong Kong .
