Karl Korinek (born December 7, 1940 in Vienna ; † March 9, 2017 ) was an Austrian constitutional lawyer. From 1978 to 2008 he was a member of the Austrian Constitutional Court and its President from January 1, 2003 to April 30, 2008.

Life

Karl Korinek was born as the son of Franz Korinek (Secretary General of the Federal Chamber of Commerce since 1950 and Federal Minister of Finance from 1963/64 ). After his final examination on Mariahilfer high school in Vienna in 1958 he studied at the University of Vienna Law and in 1963 for Dr. iur. PhD .

From 1964 to 1973 he was legal advisor to the Federal Chamber of Commerce (advisor to the scientific department). In 1970 he completed his habilitation with a paper on economic self-administration (see below) for constitutional and administrative law at the University of Salzburg . From 1973 to 1976 he was full professor of public law at the University of Graz , then from 1976 to 1995 at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and finally from 1995 to 2003 at the University of Vienna.

Karl Korinek had been a member of the Constitutional Court since 1978 and was repeatedly elected permanent advisor. From 1999 to 2002 he was Vice-President and since January 1, 2003 President of the Constitutional Court. In a letter dated March 12, 2008, he announced his resignation to the Federal Chancellor for health reasons at the end of April 2008.

From 1986 to 2002 Korinek also held the position of President of the Austrian Standards Institute (ON).

Korinek combined, according to Die Presse on April 26, 2008, "his passion for law with a remarkable cultural and musical knowledge". In 2005, apart from his scientific publications, he achieved a non-fiction bestseller with Der Onkel Julius and Der Wiederaufbau Österreichs Österreichs in Anecdotes . In 2007 an interview with the Radio-Stephansdom music director Ursula Magnes was published as an audio book ( This is culture too ). Books on Joseph Haydn and Richard Strauss ' opera Der Rosenkavalier followed.

Korinek was a widower, his daughter Elisabeth is a business economist and his son Stephan is a lawyer.

Act

Korinek was a member of various Austrian and international scientific associations, a. a. the Association of German Constitutional Law Teachers . He is also known for more than 200 academic papers, including several independent publications, primarily on questions of constitutional law (in particular the economic constitution, protection of fundamental rights, control and constitutional jurisdiction), broadcasting and telecommunications law, general administrative law and administrative sciences, spatial planning law and construction - and right of residence.
