Anton Mahnig

Anton Mahnig (born June 17, 1899 in Windisch-Feistritz , † April 14, 1988 ) was an Austrian lawyer and judge . Mahnig was a judge at the Administrative Court from 1947 to 1961 , where he served as its vice-president from 1957. After leaving the Administrative Court , Anton Mahnig was a member of the Constitutional Court from 1961 , where he was also appointed Vice President. He is one of the few Austrian lawyers who have become vice-presidents of two supreme courts in the course of their career.

Professional background

Anton Mahnig began his legal career as a trainee judge in the Styrian capital Graz , where he was finally appointed assistant judge in the ordinary jurisdiction . In 1929 he became a commissioner at the Disability Compensation Commission in Graz and subsequently at the Federal Ministry for Social Administration .

In 1947 Anton Mahnig was appointed Hofrat of the Administrative Court, where as a judge he mainly dealt with matters of social security law. Seven years later, in 1954, Mahnig was appointed President of the Senate at the VwGH, and three years later, in 1957, he was promoted to Vice-President of the Administrative Court. On April 23, 1958, Anton Mahnig was initially appointed as a substitute member of the Constitutional Court on April 1, 1958 by Federal President Theodor Körner at the suggestion of the Federal Government .

After he retired as Vice President of the VwGH in 1961, he was again appointed Vice President of the Constitutional Court by Federal President Adolf Schärf on July 11, 1961 at the suggestion of the Federal Government . He remained so until his voluntary resignation on September 30, 1969. For his work as Vice-President of the two courts of public law, Anton Mahnig was awarded the Great Silver Medal of Honor with the Star for Services to the Republic of Austria .
