This list contains all persons who have been appointed as members or substitute members of the Austrian Constitutional Court since its establishment in 1919 . In the second section there is also a list of the previous presidents of the Constitutional Court. The third section contains a graphic representation of the succession of Austrian constitutional judges since 1946.

The Constitutional Court consists of a President, a Vice-President and twelve other members. In addition, another six substitute members have been appointed, who are called in on a case-by-case basis if the members are unable to attend. All members and substitute members of the Constitutional Court have been appointed by the Federal President since 1921 , whereby the Federal President is bound by proposals from three organs: The Federal Government proposes the President and the Vice-President as well as six other members and three substitute members, three members and two substitute members are proposed by the National Council and three other members and a substitute member of the Federal Council .

In order to be proposed as a constitutional judge, you must have completed a law degree and have ten years of legal professional experience. In contrast to the National Council and the Federal Council, the federal government may not include lawyers or notaries in its proposal. As a rule, the members of the VfGH come from the legal profession, the judiciary, the group of law professors and that of the administrative officials. VfGH members are constitutionally guaranteed the judicial guarantees (independence, immovability, immovability). In principle, they exercise their office from the date of their appointment until the end of the year in which they turn 70.

President Christoph Grabenwarter and his predecessors Brigitte Bierlein and Gerhart Holzinger

This list includes all presidents of the Constitutional Court since its establishment in 1919 in chronological order. The Austrian Constitutional Court and thus the office of President did not exist from 1934 to 1945, which is why this period is highlighted in gray in the list.

Membership timeline since 1946

The following timeline provides information about the successors of the members of the Constitutional Court and by whom they were proposed as constitutional judges. This sequence can be traced on the basis of the appointment and departure dates as well as the respective proposal on which the members were appointed. The sequence bar does not begin until 1946, as the provisional constitutional court in office in 1945/46 did not lead to any proposals for the appointment of members and it is therefore not possible to determine which member has succeeded which other member. For the same reason, namely the lack of traceability of the exact succession, the members of the Constitutional Court of the First Republic in the period from 1919 to 1934 are not included in the graph.

  • BReg1–6: Members who were appointed on the proposal of the Federal Government.
  • NR1–3: Members who were appointed on the proposal of the National Council.
  • BR1–3: members who were appointed on the proposal of the Federal Council.
