Christoph Herbst (born June 8, 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer , manager and constitutional judge . He currently works as a lawyer in Vienna and as a judge at the Austrian Constitutional Court .

education

Christoph Herbst was born on June 8, 1960 in the Austrian capital Vienna. He also completed his school career in Vienna and graduated in 1978 from the renowned Wiener Schottengymnasium , a Catholic private school in the first district of Vienna . Following this, he started at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna the Study of Law and received his doctorate there in 1983. Doctor of Law (Dr. iur.). From 1982 he worked as an assistant in the chair of university professor Günther Winkler at the Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Vienna . In 1997, when he had already been working for a long time, Christoph Herbst completed a postgraduate degree at the University of St. Gallen , where he obtained the academic title Master of Business Law (MBL).

Professional background

Following his university work as an assistant at the Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law, Christoph Herbst became a research assistant at the Austrian Constitutional Court from 1985 to 1992. In 1988 he did a short practical job at the Linz-Land district administration authority and in 1990 he passed the federal administrative service examination. From 1990 to 1998, Herbst was employed as a part- time lecturer at the Law and Social Science Faculties of the University of Vienna for lectures on constitutional and administrative law.

In 1992 Christoph Herbst switched to the private sector when he became a trainee lawyer at Schönherr Barfuß Torggler & Partner . He has been a licensed attorney since 1995 and is now also a partner in the Vienna law firm Herbst Kinsky Rechtsanwälte GmbH . His legal specialties are capital market, antitrust and competition law. But in other cases, too, Herbst became known to a wider public. Herbst was Ludwig Adamovich's lawyer when he was sued by Natascha Kampusch's mother for reputational damage.

Between 2002 and 2010, Herbst was a member of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Wien AG , and he was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board from 2009 onwards. When Herbert Kaufmann resigned from the Management Board in 2010, Herbst switched to his position on an interim basis in January 2011 and, according to his own statements, wanted to return to the Supervisory Board after appointing a new Management Board.

In June 2011, however, Herbst was proposed by the Austrian Federal Council as a judge at the Constitutional Court and sworn in by Federal President Heinz Fischer at the beginning of July . He therefore resigned from his position as CEO of Flughafen Wien AG at the end of August 2011 and since then has only worked part-time as a lawyer alongside the position of constitutional judge. As a constitutional judge, he is currently also one of the permanent consultants at the Constitutional Court.
