Johannes Schnizer was born on September 14, 1959 in the Styrian capital Graz as the son of the university professor for canon law Helmut Schnizer . From 1965 to 1977 he attended compulsory schools and the upper level of the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium Kirchengasse in Graz , where he graduated in 1977 . Following this, he began his studies of law at the University of Salzburg and graduated in 1981 with the promotion of Doctor of Laws from (Dr. iur.).

Johannes Schnizer is divorced and has no children. His former partner is the SPÖ member of the National Council Andrea Kuntzl .

Professional background

While still a student, Johannes Schnizer was employed as a research assistant from 1978, later as a contract assistant at the Institute for Roman Law, Legal Dogma History and General Private Law Doctrine at the University of Salzburg under the direction of University Professor Theo Mayer-Maly . From 1981 to 1983 he was also employed as a lecturer at the renowned Italian University of Padua .

As a result, Johannes Schnizer worked as a research assistant at the Constitutional Court from 1982 to 1992, before he was employed as a research assistant for the SPÖ parliamentary group in the Austrian National Council in 1992 . From 1994 to 2008 he was also a member of the federal electoral authority and was also involved in the 2003/04 Austria Convention . In 2007 Schnizer moved from the National Council to the cabinet of Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer , where he became the latter's head of cabinet. In 2009 Schnizer was once again an official of the Parliamentary Administration, where he was responsible for legal advice for the Compensation Fund of the Republic of Austria. Schnizer is also currently a member of the University Council of the University of Vienna .

In 2009 Johannes Schnizer was nominated by the federal government as a new constitutional judge at the suggestion of the SPÖ and in 2010 was appointed by Federal President Heinz Fischer . As a constitutional judge, he is also one of the permanent consultants of the VfGH.

An interview with the magazine Falter (No. 39/2016) caused quite a stir in September 2016 , where he defended the actions of the Constitutional Court in the case of the annulment of the run-off election for the Federal President , but indicated that, in his opinion, the shortcomings were affecting the candidate's election assessors Norbert Hofer was already known after the first ballot, but they did not influence the electoral authority accordingly in order to be able to prepare the challenge instead.
