Christoph Grabenwarter (born August 4, 1966 in Bruck an der Mur ) is an Austrian legal scholar , university professor and constitutional judge. He has been President of the Austrian Constitutional Court since February 19, 2020 . He was previously Vice-President since 2018 and a member of the Court of Justice since 2005.

Education and career

After passing the matriculation examination at the higher boarding school of the federal government Graz-Liebenau in 1984, Grabenwarter studied law and commercial science at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1988 with a Mag. Iur. or 1989 as Mag. rer. soc. oec. from. He then did his doctorate in both sciences: in 1991, Dr. iur. and in 1994 Dr. rer. soc. oec. From 1988 to 1997 he also worked as a university assistant at the university. In 1997 there followed his habilitation with the venia legendi for constitutional law, administrative law and comparative law in public law.

From 1997 to 1999, Grabenwarter was initially a visiting professor at the University of Linz , before becoming Professor of Public Law at the University of Bonn in 1999 . In 2002 he accepted a chair for Comparative and European Public Law and Business Law at the University of Graz . In 2006 he moved to the Institute for Austrian and European Public Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business as a university professor for public law . Since 2008 he has held the chair for public law, commercial law and international law at the Institute for European and International Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, as well as its deputy head.

Christoph Grabenwarter has been a judge at the Austrian Constitutional Court since 2005. On February 23, 2018, Christoph Grabenwarter was sworn in as Vice President of the Constitutional Court by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen at the suggestion of the Federal Government . After the previous VfGH President Brigitte Bierlein was proposed by Federal President Van der Bellen as transitional Federal Chancellor on June 2, 2019 and then resigned from her position at the Constitutional Court, Christoph Grabenwarter took over as her deputy in accordance with Section 3 Paragraph 4 in conjunction with Paragraph 2 VfGG interim management of the VfGH. On February 12, 2020, the Federal Government finally decided to propose Christoph Grabenwarter to the Federal President as President of the Constitutional Court. He was appointed and sworn in as President of the Constitutional Court on February 19, 2020 by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen.

In addition, Christoph Grabenwarter has been a member of the Advisory Committee of Experts for the candidates for the election of judges at the ECHR in Strasbourg since January 2018 (as its deputy chairman since January 2018) and an Austrian member since 2006 (2015 to 2017 vice-president) of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe .

Private life

Christoph Grabenwarter is married to a notary and has two daughters. He often spends his free time in Mank , where he has roots and his wife runs her notary's office.
