Theo Öhlinger

Theodor "Theo" Öhlinger (born June 22, 1939 in Ried im Innkreis ) is an Austrian constitutional lawyer and university professor .

life and work

After visiting the elementary school (1946-1950) and a grammar school (1950-1958) studied Öhlinger 1958-1962 Philosophy and 1962-1966 legal and political science at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna. From 1967 to 1972 he was a member of the constitutional service of the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria and, between 1965 and 1974, he also worked as a university assistant. In 1972 he completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck, where he became an associate in the following year. Professor of European Law appointed. In 1974 he accepted a position at the University of Vienna and worked there until 2007 as full professor of public law . From 1995 to 2005 he also took on the role of board member of the Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna . Visiting professorships have taken him to the University of Paris-Nanterre , the Dickinson School of Law at the Pennsylvania State University and the Universities of Friborg and the University of Aix-en-Provence .

From 1977 to 1989 the lawyer acted as a substitute member of the Constitutional Court , from 1989 to 1995 he was director of the Federal Administrative Academy . From 1984 to 1990 he was a member of the Committee of Independent Experts of the European Social Charter , and from 1992 to 2004 he was a board member of the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL). Since 1999 he has held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

From 2003 to 2005 Öhlinger was a member of the Austria Convention , 2007 and 2008 a member of the working group on constitutional reform in the Federal Chancellery. In his writings, speeches, lectures and interviews he regularly takes a position on historical and current constitutional issues.

Öhlinger has received several awards, including a. In 2012 he was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor and in 2011 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class . In 2019 he received the Wilhelm Hartel Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
