Peter Rummel (lawyer)

Peter Rummel (born October 2, 1940 in Duisburg ) is an Austrian legal scholar , professor emeritus at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and author of several standard legal works. He lives in Vienna .

Life

After attending school in Meckenheim (Rhineland) and Rheinbach and graduating from high school , Peter Rummel began studying law and economics at the University of Bonn in 1959 . In 1964, he put in Cologne the First State Exam from, was in Bonn assistant to Franz Bydlinski and received his doctorate there in 1967 from the law (title of 1968 published thesis : "compensation for accumulated emissions: for loss allocation in tort and intervention Liability").

After completing his doctorate, he followed Franz Bydlinski as a research assistant at the University of Vienna , where he received his habilitation in 1970 (title of the habilitation thesis published in 1972: "Contract interpretation according to the traffic custom"). On October 1, 1970 he was appointed full professor for civil law at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . On the occasion of his appointment as professor, he was granted Austrian citizenship.

Peter Rummel's main areas of work are contract law, compensation and enrichment law, environmental law, expropriation law, public procurement law and banking law. In 1983 the first edition of the “Commentary on the General Civil Code” appeared in two volumes under Rummel's editorship, which has since influenced Austrian legal practice like no other work. In the private law area there is hardly a decision by the Supreme Court in which this work is not cited. Since 1989 Peter Rummel has been editor of the “Juristische Blätter” (JBl), one of the largest Austrian legal journals.

From 1978 to 1980 Peter Rummel was dean of the law faculty of Johannes Kepler University, from 1989/90 he was visiting professor at the Institute for Environmental and Technology Law at the University of Trier, from 2000 to 2006 he was a member of the extended board of the civil law teachers' association (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).

In numerous well-known cases, Rummel acted as an expert or referee. From 2005 to 2006 he was chairman of the court of arbitration that decided on the restitution of the five Klimt paintings ( Adele Bloch-Bauer I , Adele Bloch-Bauer II , Apfelbaum , Buchenwald / Birkenwald and houses in Unterach am Attersee ) from Maria Altmann .

In the documentary Die Affäre Klimt (OT: Stealing Klimt , Great Britain, 2006, 88 min., Book: Martin Smith, director: Jane Chablani, production: Films of Record), Rummel can be seen at the announcement of the award.

Peter Rummel retired on October 1st, 2009 . On the occasion of his retirement, the Peter Rummel Study Fund was founded to promote talented students in the field of civil law at the Johannes Kepler University Linz.

His son is the cellist Martin Rummel .
