Martin Rummel

Martin Rummel (born May 2, 1974 in Linz ) is an Austrian cellist and cultural manager .

Career

Martin Rummel was born as the son of the lawyer Peter Rummel and grew up in Linz. He attended the elementary school in Linz-Harbach and graduated from the Academic High School in 1992 with distinction . After early harpsichord and piano lessons with Helga Schiff-Riemann (the mother of cellist Heinrich Schiff ), he began playing the cello in 1982 with Wilfried Tachezi at today's Anton Bruckner Private University . At the same time, he continued his harpsichord studies with August Humer at the same institute , but did not complete it. In March 1991 he passed the cellist diploma examination with distinction and was the youngest graduate of the house to date. Afterwards, after brief private studies with Robert Cohen in London , he switched to William Pleeth there . In the second half of the 1990s he studied with Maria Kliegel in Cologne and completed his diploma with distinction and the concert exam at the local music college. He then returned for final studies until his death to William Pleeth in London, whose last pupil he was.

Concert activity

Rummel has been active internationally as a soloist and chamber musician since around 1990. Concerts have taken him to Europe, Asia, Oceania, South America and the USA. In recent years, for example, he has performed at the Wiener Konzerthaus , the Wiener Musikverein , the Brucknerhaus Linz, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf , the Krannert Center in Urbana, the “ Carinthian Summer ”, the “Varna Summer” and the “ Biennale di Venezia ” .

Rummel has played numerous world premieres, including the “Concerto Drammatico” by Graham Whettam (2000, USA) and the part of the solo cello in Thomas Daniel Schlee's church opera “Ich, Hiob” (2007, Ossiach). He has studied their works with many important contemporary composers, including Alfred Schnittke and Sofia Gubaidulina .

In recent years Rummel has devoted himself increasingly to the cyclical performance of the solo suites by Johann Sebastian Bach and projects such as his own arrangement of the song cycle Winterreise by Franz Schubert , which he is performing with pianist Norman Shetler and actors such as August Zirner and Xaver Hutter .

Educational activity

From October 2000 to October 2007 Rummel led a violoncello class at the Kassel City Music Academy . In November 2008 he was appointed to a chair at the University of Auckland , where he led a cello class in block lessons until the end of 2013. He gives guest and master classes, for example, at the Holzhauser Musiktage , at the University of St Andrews , Folkwang University , the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory , the Longy School of Music in Boston, the Orchesterzentrum NRW and the International Summer Academy in Lenk (Switzerland).

From the winter semester 2014/15 Rummel was a lecturer at the University of Vienna in the university course in Cultural Communication. On January 1, 2016, he was appointed associate professor to head the "School of Music" at the University of Auckland .

Between 2004 and 2009, almost all of the major études for violoncello were published by Bärenreiter-Verlag under Rummels . For the large collections of David Popper , Friedrich Grützmacher and Jean Louis Duport , he wrote volumes of text that are enclosed with the editions.

Activity as artistic director and cultural mediator

  • 2007 to 2012 director of the “Klassik Musikfest Mühlviertel” in Oberneukirchen
  • 2008 to 2011 director of the "Vienna Guitar Festival"
  • 2010 to 2015 President of the "Vienna Music Group"
  • 2014 to 2015 member of the VTMÖ management team

From 2004 to 2008 Rummel was also the spokesman of the board of the “Instruments for Talents” foundation that his mother set up to provide talented young musicians with string instruments. From 2008 to 2014 he hosted the monthly program "Rummels Rubric". on Radio Stephansdom , where he portrayed a musician in every broadcast. In 2009 he founded the music company " paladino music " together with the cultural promoter Wolfgang Lamprecht , which he has been running alone since 2011 as "paladino media gmbh". In 2015 paladino media gmbh bought the label KAIROS, which specializes in contemporary music, and has since become the most diversified company in the classical music industry in Austria with four labels and a publisher.
