The Orchesterzentrum NRW in Dortmund is a joint facility of the four state universities of music in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the first cross-university training facility for future orchestra musicians in Europe. As part of the newly designed master's degree in “Orchestral Playing”, students are prepared here in four semesters in a practical and targeted manner for a career in renowned orchestras. For graduates from a music academy who see their future in an orchestra, this master’s degree offers a comprehensive professional specialization.

In addition to training musicians, concerts are also held in the building. The International Schubert Competition Dortmund u. a. carried out in the building of the orchestra center.

The Orchesterzentrum NRW has been housed in a specially constructed building in downtown Dortmund since spring 2009. In the immediate vicinity of the Dortmund Concert Hall , students will find good working conditions. The classrooms and rooms at the Orchesterzentrum NRW offer excellent acoustics and are precisely tailored to the needs of the musicians. The building also has its own chamber music hall with 350 seats, which is used for various concert series.

On April 29, 2009 the building was opened with a festive event. The keynote speaker was Fritz Pleitgen, head of the Ruhr 2010 Capital of Culture .

The focus of the training is on training orchestra-specific skills and preparation for the audition and probationary year. In addition to individual instrumental tuition, the range of subjects includes audition simulations, sample movements, orchestral studies, work analysis and ensemble playing. The curriculum also includes performance coaching, relaxation techniques and mental training. In this way, the students in the master’s degree in “Orchestral Playing” are not only prepared technically but also mentally for performance situations and auditions. Seminars on topics such as cultural management or music physiology complete the offer. The aim of the master’s course is to provide the students with comprehensive qualifications for their future profession in four semesters and to increase their chances of an attractive position in a professional orchestra.

Teachers

In order to create a close connection to the European orchestral scene, concert masters, section leaders and solo players from the major German and European orchestras teach as guest lecturers in the master’s course in “orchestral playing”. The Orchesterzentrum NRW draws on professional radio, concert and opera orchestras from all over Europe and comprehensively maps the future job market for students. Working with leading orchestral musicians, students get to know a wide range of musical requirements and perceptions. Repeated audition simulations help to assess and improve your own skills. The personal contact creates an artistic network from which the students benefit on their future careers. Experienced psychologists and trainers at the Orchesterzentrum NRW take care of the mental preparation for the audition and the trial year. Professors and lecturers at the four music academies involved are responsible for ongoing supervision in the main subject as well as part of the orchestral studies and composition samples.

entry requirements

The master's degree in “Orchestral Playing” is aimed at applicants who have completed a degree in Germany or abroad (instrumental training, main subject grade 2.0 and better). Prospective students send their application directly to one of the four participating music colleges in Detmold, Düsseldorf, Essen or Cologne, where the aptitude tests also take place. The course begins every year in the summer and winter semesters.

Orchestral work

The profile of the Orchesterzentrum NRW is characterized by first-class orchestral work. During the four-semester master’s program, the students are regularly involved in various orchestral projects. Under the direction of internationally renowned conductors, they train in these study phases to react to different requirements, to listen carefully and to integrate themselves into the orchestra. At the same time, they are expanding their stylistic competence and their repertoire. Thanks to the large symphony concerts that take place once a semester in the Dortmund Concert Hall, students also gain valuable performance experience.
