The International Schubert Competition Dortmund is a German music competition in the field of classical music in the sense of European art music of the 17th – 19th centuries. Century. The focus here is on the works of the namesake Franz Schubert .

history

The competition was founded in 1987 under the leadership of Roland Pröll . Since then it has taken place every two years as an international piano competition.

In 1996 she joined the World Federation of International Music Competitions .

Until 2007 the venue was always the Casino Hohensyburg . For the finale with orchestra, where the piano concertos of Mozart and Beethoven are mainly played due to the lack of Schubertian compositions, the Dortmund Konzerthaus will be used after its completion . It is intended to give young pianists the chance to grapple with the work of Franz Schubert .

In 2009, the Schubert competition lied duo found instead of the piano competition held first run duos in which singer or singer and pianist and pianist apply for prices. This is to honor Schubert's great lieder , which generally occupies an outstanding position in his work and within the vocal compositions. The emphasis in this competition is particularly on the duo, with which the pianist, unlike often usual, is equated with the singer in terms of his importance, so that a chamber music unit is applied and evaluated, and not a singer with an accompanist.

The LiedDuo competition alternates with the piano competition every two years. Since the competition in 2009, for the first time, all rounds have taken place in the chamber music hall of the newly built orchestra center in downtown Dortmund near the concert hall .

The competition is organized by the International Schubert Competition Dortmund eV. The competition is funded and sponsored mainly by the RAG Foundation, the Werner Richard - Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation and the Dortmund Cultural Foundation .

After the competition was still artistically directed by Roland Pröll in the first few years, Arnulf von Arnim took over this task after his retirement and continues to this day. The American pianist Irwin Gage was the artistic director of the LiedDuo competition until 2017 , whose successor was the contralto Ingeborg Danz for the III. LiedDuo competition 2018.
