Irwin Gage

Irwin Gage (born September 4, 1939 in Cleveland , Ohio ; † April 12, 2018 in Zurich ) was an American pianist and accompanist .

Life

Irwin Gage studied piano , musicology and literature at the Universities of Michigan and Yale, then at the Vienna University of Music , where Erik Werba was one of his teachers. He appeared as a pianist as a soloist, but above all as a sought-after accompanist by lieder singers such as Elly Ameling , Gundula Janowitz , Christa Ludwig , Walter Berry , Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau , Peter Schreier , Brigitte Fassbaender , Arleen Augér and Jessye Norman , with whom he regularly concerted. His collaboration with the international singing elite resulted in numerous recordings that have received numerous awards.

In addition, he passed on his musical history and critical knowledge to young singers: from 1979 to 2005, Gage was head of a class for song interpretation at the Zurich University of Music and Theater , and in 2001 he was also appointed to a professorship for song design at the Saarbrücken University of Music , where he initiated a "Lied Duo" course that is unique in Germany.

Irwin Gage has given master classes in Europe, Japan and the USA. He was a consultant and artistic director of concert series at various houses, including the Cologne Philharmonic . He was a member of many juries for singing, lied duo, chamber music and solo piano at international music competitions.
