Sebastian Lee (born December 24, 1805 in Hamburg ; † there on January 4, 1887 ) was the older of two brothers who both played the cello (the younger brother was Louis Lee ).

Life

He was tutored in Hamburg by the Romberg student Nikolaus Prell .

In 1830 Lee began his career as a soloist with concerts in Germany: first in Hamburg, then in Leipzig. This was followed by a tour via Kassel, Frankfurt to Paris, where he arrived in April 1832 and performed with great acclaim at the Théâtre-Italien .

In 1836 he made a guest appearance in London, but returned to Paris in 1837.

From 1837 to 1868 his activity as a solo cellist at the "Grand Opéra" in Paris is documented. He was also a teacher at the “ Conservatoire de Paris ”. In 1845 Lee published his well-known Violoncell-Schule op . The time in Paris was characterized by rich creativity and countless concerts in the salons of Paris society.

In direct relation to the mentioned school Op. 30 are the Etudes op. 31 vol. 1 and vol. 2 , which are also still available and in use today. Also directly related to his school are the duets Op. 36, Op. 37, Op. 38, Op. 39.

After 1868, he returned to Hamburg, presumably because of the political tensions between France and Germany, where he took part in the Philharmonic concerts .

Sebastian Lee died in Hamburg on January 4, 1887.

Relationship with other cellists

Sebastian Lee was a student of Johann Nikolaus Prell (1773-1849) , who in turn was a student of Bernhard Romberg .

Meaning and work

Sebastian Lee trained several cellists who were well known at the time. The best known of these are Ferdinand Brockmann and August Bieler .

From today's perspective, the importance of Lee lies in particular on his really grateful, musically and technically demanding etudes and duets, the study of which gives the student the means for an absolutely vocal-oriented game. Lee has the gift of creating a specific mood and a clear, unmistakable musical atmosphere during 16 bars - very well experienced, for example, in Op. 30 (exercises in the keys or Op. 101, 50 short exercises for the beginner).
