Thomas Daniel Schlee (born October 26, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian composer , cultural manager and organist .

Family, education and career

Thomas Daniel Schlee is the older of two sons of the Austro-German musicologist, theater scholar and music publisher Alfred Schlee (1901–1999) and Margarethe Molner, which means that he has been in close contact with a large number of important personalities of the music of the 20th Century.

After taking organ lessons with Friedrich Lessky , Schlee studied organ with Michael Radulescu as well as harmony and counterpoint with Erich Romanovsky from 1976 at the Vienna Musikhochschule , and composition with Francis Burt from 1982–1985 . At the same time, he studied musicology and art history at the University of Vienna , which he obtained in 1984 with a doctorate. phil. completed. 1977–1978 he was a listener in the composition class of Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris ; he was also a private student of Jean Langlais .

1986–1989 Thomas Daniel Schlee was music dramaturge at the Salzburg State Theater , while from 1988–1990 he held teaching positions at the Vienna University of Music and at the University of Salzburg . He began his career as a music manager in 1990–1998 in the role of music director of the Brucknerhaus Linz and artistic director of the International Bruckner Festival . 1999–2003 he was deputy director of the International Beethoven Festival in Bonn and 2004–2015 director of the Carinthian Summer Festival . Schlee also worked for the Guardini Foundation Berlin as a musicological project manager (1995–1998) as well as its president (1998–2001), member of the executive committee (2001–2013) and chairman of the music advisory board (2004–2011). 2008–2013 he was also a member of the University Council of the Mozarteum Salzburg.

As an organist, Thomas Daniel Schlee has given a large number of concerts and radio recordings in Austria and abroad, and has also participated in important international festivals. For his CD recordings he was a. a. with the prize of the German Record Critics and the Diapason d'Or award.
