The greatest game of his life (original title: The Greatest Game Ever Played ) is an American film by the director Bill Paxton from 2005. The biopic in the style of a sports film shows the surprising win of the US Golf Open in 1913 by the amateur and outsider Francis Ouimet .

action

Francis Ouimet is discovered playing secretly on the golf course, where he is only supposed to work as a caddy, but since his result is exceptionally good, he is invited to qualify for the amateur championships. In a dispute with his down-to-earth father, he has to promise him that if he fails, he will hang up the racket. When he goes away because of nervousness, he becomes a simple warehouse clerk. Some time later, however, an official honors him, who now invites him to the US Open, which takes place there on the square and in which superstar Harry Vardon and the British Ted Ray participate. He seizes the chance and breaks his word to his father, who blames him bitterly. When his caddy leaves him for the money, he reluctantly hires ten-year-old Eddie Lowery. But he gets his nerves under control and wins sensationally in the jump-off against Vardon and Ray.

Reviews

"Well-done staged biopic, staged in the usual style of sports success stories. Solid entertainment with good actors, but also burdened with obvious dramaturgical weaknesses. "
