Ludwig Scharinger (2012)

Ludwig Scharinger (born October 19, 1942 in Arnreit , Upper Austria ; † January 10, 2019 in Linz ) was an Austrian bank manager. From 1985 to 2012 he was General Director and CEO of Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich .

Life

Ludwig Scharinger graduated from the higher federal teaching and research institute Francisco Josephinum in Wieselburg and studied business and social economics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz .

In 1972 Scharinger joined Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich (RLB-OÖ), in 1974 he was granted power of attorney , in 1978 he was appointed to the management and from 1985 he was general director. Under the leadership of Scharinger, the RLB-OÖ experienced a strong upswing.

Ludwig Scharinger held the position of university lecturer at the Johannes Kepler University Linz for the subject area “Cooperative Affairs and Economics” and was chairman of the university council . In addition to his numerous supervisory board functions, he was Vice President of Raiffeisen Zentralbank Austria and Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic .

In addition, he was also involved in business representation. In 1985 he was elected deputy chairman of the banking and insurance division of the Upper Austria Chamber of Commerce , and since 2000 he has been chairman of the Upper Austrian branch representation for banks and insurance companies. He also made his specialist knowledge available to various committees and bodies at the federal level. In 1985 Scharinger was also elected to the supervisory board of the Upper Austrian loan guarantee company , and in 1996 also to the supervisory board of the Upper Austrian holding company.

Under Scharinger, the RLB-OÖ succeeded in further expanding its presence at the Johannes Kepler University. It all began with the construction of a (Raiffeisen) bank building, a “Raiffeisen lecture hall” and a Scharinger sponsorship award for work in economics. The sums of money invested in Kepler University through his influence also earned him the chair of the chair of the university council . Critics therefore also spoke of the fact that such sponsorship financing would make the independence of teaching and research impossible.

In order to protect voestalpine AG from an imminent hostile takeover in 2003 , he and partners forged a consortium, which today is the company's main shareholder.

In December 2008, his executive board mandate was extended by the supervisory board chaired by Jakob Auer , but he only intended to remain general director for a maximum of three years. In March 2012, at the age of 69, he resigned as General Director of the largest bank in the state of Upper Austria after almost 27 years. Heinrich Schaller was announced as his successor in October 2011 , who succeeded Scharinger at the beginning of April 2012. Scharinger was a consultant at RLB Upper Austria for a few years. On March 31, 2014, he ended his consultancy work for health reasons. Ludwig Scharinger acted as President of the Austro-Russian Friendship Society from 2012 to 2015 , which aims to network Austria and Russia in the areas of business, politics, education and culture.

Ludwig Scharinger was close to the ÖVP . His critics gave him the nickname "King Ludwig" because of his appearance, and he was often referred to as "the actual governor of Upper Austria" or "Luigi Monetti".

As a student he joined the secondary school association K.Ö.Agr.StV. Bergland Wieselburg ( MKV ). He was a member of the Catholic student associations KAV Austro-Danubia Linz and KÖStV Severina Linz in the ÖCV and, since 2008, the KAV Capitolina Rome in the CV . Like Governor Josef Pühringer , he took part in a dance event organized by German national fraternities in Linz in the past.

In 2013, Scharinger suffered an accident while hunting in Yekaterinburg , in which he broke a wrist and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Scharinger died in January 2019, leaving behind his wife Anneliese and four daughters. He was buried at the St. Magdalena cemetery (Linz) .
