The Francisco Josephinum (officially Francisco Josephinum - Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute for Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Food and Biotechnology in Wieselburg , abbreviated FJ or HBLFA, today also Competence Center for Food Technology LMTZ ) is a teaching and research center  (LFZ) in Weinzierl ( community Wieselburg , Lower Austria ) and forms from students in the fields of agriculture, food and biotechnology and agricultural technology. The affiliated research institute is the former Federal Institute for Dairy Industry . Their students are known as Josephiners .

history

The Francisco Josephinum was founded in Mödling in 1869 as a two-year middle school for the agricultural middle class by Franz von Grutsch based on the model of the theoretical agricultural school in Hildesheim and was named after Emperor Franz Joseph I. Austria's first brewing school was also established in this context . In 1934 the Mödling school moved to Weinzierl Castle near Wieselburg.

During the war, the school had to cease operations and the building also served as a hospital in 1944 and 1945. The post-war years were difficult as the school was overcrowded with returnees.

In 1956 the agricultural engineering department was established. The mechanization of agriculture should be accompanied by agriculturally trained technical specialists.

In 1982 the specialty " Dairy Farming and Food Technology " was launched as a school experiment and in 1988 it was incorporated into the mainstream school system.

In 1982 the classroom building was also built, which today houses the chemistry and physics departments. In 1990 the BUWOG student dormitory was opened. In 1991 the workshop and class building was completed. In the 1990s, the boarding school buildings were also gradually renovated and expanded.

In 1990 the three fields of agriculture, agricultural engineering and food technology were upgraded to departments. In 1993 the school trial of the special course, a three-year training with Matura , was started for technical school graduates .

In 2008, after a short construction period, the new class and boarding school building was put into operation. This means that, for the first time, sufficient capacities are available at the Weinzierl site so that there are no longer any external boarding schools. The new LMTZ was opened with the new building.

In 2004 a new curriculum came into force, with which the Josephiners can be better prepared for their future role in agriculture and forestry and their upstream and downstream production and service areas.

In the 2009/10 school year, two classes were accepted for the first time in the agricultural engineering department and so did the following year. The curriculum was changed independently of the school so that from the 4th grade a focus on "agricultural machinery and agricultural process engineering" and "renewable energies and raw materials" is possible.

In May 2011, Weinzierl Castle was opened after several years of renovation.

institution

With the Agricultural Law Amendment Act 2004, the Higher Agricultural College Francisco-Josephinum in Wieselburg and the Federal Institute for Agricultural Engineering in Wieselburg were merged to form the "Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute for Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Food Technology Francisco Josephinum in Wieselburg" (HBLFA). The management is located in Weinzierl Castle (Wieselburg-Land municipality). The research-relevant area of the HBLFA Francisco Josephinum is located at the location of the former Federal Institute for Agricultural Engineering in Wieselburg (Stadt, Rottenhauser Straße 1), with the abbreviation "BLT" standing for the research and development area Biomass - Logistics - Technology, and the tasks of the former Federal Agency for Agricultural Engineering (BLT) largely correspond. The Food Technology Center (LMTZ) is responsible for teaching and research services in the field of food technology and in 2008 moved from Wolfpassing to Wieselburg to the newly constructed LMTZ building on the school grounds.

education

Entrance to the castle grounds

The Francisco Josephinum provides a well-founded higher vocational training with a broad, general knowledge background. The pupils acquire knowledge and practical skills that enable them to pursue a high-level occupation in the fields of agriculture, agricultural engineering and food and biotechnology with a view to the greater Europe area.

The maturity and diploma examination after five years of training - in the advanced course after three years - entitles you to practice relevant trades as well as trade, the maturity test for university studies and, after proven professional practice, to acquire the title of " engineer ".
