Franz Xaver Ritter von Grutsch (born November 1, 1810 in Vienna , † December 18, 1882 in Vienna) was an Austrian author , politician and promoter of the agricultural school system.

Life

Franz von Grutsch was the son of an upholsterer. He graduated from high school and turned to the theater. Both as a writer and as an actor he was successful with several plays. He married the sister of the Greek minister, Koletti, who died soon afterwards, but left him a significant fortune.

After he settled in Hinterbrühl in Lower Austria, he married the dancer Karoline Planer, the sister of the actress Josefine Planer.

In public life in his new home he was active as a local judge from 1843 to 1859 and from 1859 to 1864 as mayor as well as in agricultural associations. So he organized agricultural exhibitions, which brought in great profits and which he used in foundations. In 1864 he first founded a vine and fruit tree nursery in Mödling with these funds. In 1866 he founded an agricultural advanced training school in Mödling , which was followed by such schools in the neighborhood in the following years.

Based on the model of the agricultural school (the later Michelsenschule ) in Hildesheim, he planned an educational establishment for the agricultural middle class . In 1869 he was able to start teaching with 48 students at the Francisco Josephinum , the forerunner of today's school of the same name in Wieselburg-Land .

In 1881 he was ennobled for his services.

As the first mayor, Grutsch lies in a grave of honor at the Hinterbrühl cemetery.
