Mauro Staccioli (born February 11, 1937 in Volterra , † January 1, 2018 in Milan ) was an Italian sculptor .

Life

In 1960 Staccioli moved to Sardinia and taught in Cagliari . In 1963 he settled in Milan, where he taught at the Brera Art High School in 1968, where he was rector in 1974/75 and 1978/79. He then headed the Lovere Art School .

In 1976 and 1978 he was invited to the Venice Biennale as representative of Italy . There, in 1978, his provocative work Muro attracted attention: an 8 m high concrete wall that blocked the view of the entrance to the Italian pavilion.

Staccioli was an associate member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium , Brussels, and a member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca , Rome.

Staccioli lived and worked in Milan and Volterra.

Staccioli began his artistic career with painting and engraving. He came to sculpture in the late 1960s, where he began very early to exhibit sculptures in public spaces, for example in 1972 at Sculture in città in Volterra. With his so-called sculpture interventions , which are specifically tailored to the geographical installation location, he aimed to change the perception of the location in the eye of the beholder. An exhibition in Vigevano in 1977 was titled Lettura di un ambiente (Reading the Environment).

Often Staccioli's works are based on a simple geometric shape such as a circular ring or arc or a triangle. He often used concrete or steel as materials.
