Gillo Dorfles , also Angelo Eugenio Dòrfles (born April 12, 1910 in Trieste , Austria-Hungary ; died March 2, 2018 in Milan ), was an Italian painter and art critic .

Life

Angelo Dorfles' father came from Gorizia , Austria-Hungary, his mother from Genoa . After Italy entered the First World War , he stayed in Genoa with his mother, and Trieste became Italian after 1918. Like his childhood friends Roberto Bazlen and Ernesto Rogers , Dorfles was influenced by the cultural ideas of Central Europe by the Trieste-based Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba . With Bazlen he discussed the literature of Franz Kafka and Frank Wedekind . In 1934 he sat in on the Anthroposophical Society at the Goetheanum in Dornach .

He completed his medical studies in Milan and Rome in 1935 with a specialization in psychiatry . He began to paint as a layman and painted mystical-grotesque pictures until 1940. After the war ended, he took part in an exhibition in Milan in 1945. From 1948 he was one of the founders of the Movimento per l'arte concreta , in whose exhibitions he regularly participated, and in 1956 he co-founded the Associazione per il disegno industriale . He gave up painting towards the end of the 1950s, turned to art theory and art criticism and devoted himself in particular to contemporary art. He taught aesthetics at the universities of Florence , Trieste, Milan and Cagliari . He started painting again in the early 1980s.

Dorfles wrote a large number of essays and several books. In 1987 he curated an exhibition about the futurist Gino Severini in Bolzano . He wrote the foreword to a catalog of furniture designs by Giotto Stoppino , to a book about the designer Marco Zanuso , and a contribution to a catalog raisonné of Arnaldo Pomodoros . In 2009 this was followed by an essay on the Bernd Hockemeyer ceramic collection and the foreword to a retrospective of Gianni Colombo .

In 1968 Dorfles published a fundamental study of kitsch and subsequently dealt with the interconnection of technology and consumption with art.

His own artistic production from the period between 1930 and 1960 was shown in Milan in 1986 and in the following years in Aosta , Rome and repeatedly in Milan.

Dorfles was honored frequently in old age, he received honorary doctorates from the Polytechnic of Milan , the Università di Palermo , the Università di Cagliari and the National Autonomous University of Mexico . He died in Milan in March 2018, six weeks before his 108th birthday.
