Gianni Colombo studied from 1956 to 1959 at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. He began his artistic activities as early as 1954. In 1958 he created his first monochrome reliefs . From 1959 he developed his kinetic objects.

In the development of his art, Gianni Colombo transferred the kinetic representation of movement more and more to spaces and the use of light. In 1959 Gianni Colombo co-founded the artist group " Gruppo T " together with Giovanni Anceschi , Davide Boriani and Gabriele De Vecchi ; which was mainly devoted to kinetic art. He also worked closely with Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani and took part in the exhibitions and activities of the " Galerie Azimut ".

From 1961 to 1964 he mainly worked with light objects. With these objects he staged the visualization of spatial changes. In 1963 he was a co-founder of the international artist movement “ Nouvelle Tendence ”. From 1967 to 1970 Colombo dealt with geometrical bodies and their topological changes. In 1968 he took part in the 4th documenta in Kassel in the Ambiente department . In the same year he became XXXIV. International Biennale for Art in Venice , where he won the first prize for painting with the Environment Spazio elastico .

Since the 1970s he has designed numerous walk-in spatial works of art. He dealt with architectural aspects and directly involved the viewer of his art in the spatial structures he had created. He created spatial works of art that were set in motion when individual integrated elements were shifted.

In 1977 he founded, together with Giulio Turcato , Carla Accardi , Concetto Pozzati , Emilio Tadini , Carmelo Cappello and Mimmo Rotella, the group “ Cooperarte ” which organized exhibitions all over Italy.
